How to Check if Outlook is Down

Knowing how to check if Outlook is down or whether it’s a technical issue at your end will help you determine your approach when it comes to troubleshooting. Perhaps it’s due to your internet service provider being offline? Or maybe there are wrong settings affecting your email’s ability to being able to function? Outlook is one of the most popular email clients for businesses around the world, so having a good background knowledge is important. When Outlook goes down or offline, it can be detrimental for your business. It means you won’t not be able to receive emails from clients. You will also not be able to send messages to anyone. You may see something that looks a little like the screenshot below.

What is Wrong with Outlook Today?

This is what most people type directly into their search engine to discover if Outlook is down. There are a couple of steps you can follow:

  1. You can see whether or not Outlook is down by going to the Microsoft Service Status website. When you get there, check on the Status of Outlook.com. If there are any current issues, they will be displayed on there. You can see in the above screenshot that Outlook was experiencing issues at the time when the image was taken. If there are other Microsoft services that are experiencing issues, they will also be displayed. In the above example Teams is also down. Other services, such as OneDrive, Skype and Phone Link are working fine.
  2. Optionally, you can check whether or not using a site that’s dedicated to showing whether sites are down. An example is IsItDownRightNow. There are many similar websites that offer the same functionality. However, the challenge with this is that the Outlook website may actually be up but it will not be functioning properly. That’s not something that you can see on these sites. So, the best option here is to go to the Outlook Server status website to do a proper check there.

What can you do if Outlook is down?

Let’s assume that Outlook is down, what do you do? Does it mean you will not be able to send and receive emails. We have already noted that that can be detrimental for businesses.

Unfortunately, if Outlook is down, there is nothing that you can do other than wait. If there are other accounts that you manage via Outlook, you can go there to check your email directly.

As an example, if you have your Gmail or your company email linked to Outlook, you can go to these platforms to check your messages directly. The good news is that when Outlook is back up and running, your messages will be delivered to your inbox.

Look for email signature compatible software

In this post, we focused on how to check if Outlook is working or not. Making sure your email signature doesn’t affect your ability to send emails should be high on your list of priorities. One thing that you will want to do is to ensure that you properly manage your email signature. You can manually create your email signature.
